A very nice complete example of a Model 1839 Federal issue cavalry sling in black bridle leather. Issued to and used by Union cavalry prior to and during the Civil War. Worn over the trooper’s shoulder with the snap hook attached to the sling bar on the carbine.

Outer edge of the leather decorative tooling along the entire length that measures 52 inches long and 2 3/8 inches wide. This fine cavalry sling appears to have been shortened from its original length of 56 inches.

Bridle leather surface is very strong and supple with very light areas of crazing. Maker marked just above the last set of holes, “CUMMINGS / SPRINGFIELD / MASS.” Stamping faint but visible. This sling is from his contracts dating from Nov. 1864 until March 1865. Brass buckle and tip “batwings” original to the sling having never been cleaned!

Steel sling swivel is strong and stamped with the maker’s name, “O.B. NORTH & CO. / NEW HAVEN – CT”.

A very nice example with supple bridle leather. Getting hard to find.
