Here is an original, well done Confederate copy of a Model 1859 McClellan saddle. In excellent condition overall, this wartime cavalry saddle remains tight, very strong and retains most of its original components, except for the Girth straps. This McClellan copy features its open-seat tree with the exposed rawhide cover still in excellent original condition. Stitching is very strong, smooth and unfrayed. Saddle has none of the usual brass escutcheons and mortises on the cantle and pommel. Front face of pommel does suffer from wear and three small tears to the rawhide. Saddle rings are “stapled” in place on the frame.
Tacked onto the saddle are its original set of large, black harness leather sweat skirts. Pommel and cantle leather quarter straps are attached with rivets featuring large and ornate brass heads. Girth “D-rings” have 12” long girth straps but no cinch. Stirrup straps retain original sweat leathers (fenders) riveted in place. Large, bent wood stirrups are wrapped in a black leather hood or boot. Wooden stirrups feature a 3” deep tread. The stirrup hoods wrap around the frames and are in excellent condition and made of strong black harness leather tacked in place.
No markings or stampings visible. All the leathers are in good condition but show a fair amount of crazing to the surface finish due to age and heavy use.
A very nice and displayable example of a typically plain Confederate copy of McClellan saddle. [jet]

This cap's crown, top and base band are made from a medium weight open weave woolen fabric which may be a blend of sorts. It certainly looks "home spun". The kepi gives indications of being a depot made item but may actually have been homemade as… (1268-037). Learn More »
