Cruppers were intended to help keep saddles from slipping. This one is nicely marked by J.B. Sickles and Company of St. Louis, who had army contracts throughout the war for all sorts of leather gear and accouterments. This still has an excellent surface finish with just minor wrinkles at points where it would flex. The Sickles stamp is visible and legible as is the more deeply struck US Ordnance sub-inspector stamp next to it.

The tail loop and both saddle straps are there, each with buckle, one fixed loop and one sliding loop. Some white residue will clean. The leather still has a deep brown color to the finish.  [sr]
