This 1904 pattern McClellan saddle has good color to the original brown russet leather and full leather coverage of the seat with no tears or holes, and has tight seams. The quarter-straps, girth straps, and horsehair girth are there, as are stirrup straps and stirrups. All straps are intact and solid. The stirrups show just a little more wear than the seat, which is to be expected. The saddle is an artillery pattern and the stirrups are cavalry, which might indicate use by an artillery NCO. We often forget that artillery was largely horse-drawn well into the twentieth century. This is a nice example of a regulation U.S. saddle for the period of the Mexican Border campaign and World War One. A single blanket roll strap is present, but appears to be a reproduction added by a collector for display. [sr]
