Thin leather belt that meas. approx. 1.25 inches wide and is approx. 30.00 inches long.
Attached to the belt is a rectangular plate with “V. M. I.” in block letters on a stippled background at center. The stippled background is surrounded by a smooth edge. The reverse of the plate has a brass keeper through which the belt passes attaching it to the plate by friction and a leather keeper. There is also a wide brass tongue which holds a brass keeper attached to one end of the belt.
The belt is in good condition with the leather being supple. There is a tooled line running along each edge and a maker’s mark on one end but this is unreadable. The plate has a nice mellow patina and is in good condition.
VMI is well-known for the charge of its Cadets at the Battle of New Market in 1864 and the burning of the school by Union General Hunter later that same year. The school has a proud tradition and items related to it are always collectable.
