Buff leather sword belt in very good condition. The leather is strong and supple with no weak spots. The shoulder support strap (Sam Brown belt) is of bridle leather but is complete and strong; some cracking and minor loss of finish on its surface. Both of the original buff sword traces (hangers) are present. All hardware is present as well. The white interior surface of the leather shows surface dirt from age and use.
The belt plate is the Pattern 1851 NCO plate with applied German silver wreath and has acquired a beautiful patina. The keeper and plate have matching numbers, “558”.
The accompanying pistol cartridge box has strong leather and tight seams. Outer flap shows cracking and a little loss of finish at the top “hinge” area. Latch tab is complete and unbroken. The interior of the box is good. Newark, NJ maker’s stamp inside. Belt loops are stitched and riveted. Brass finial is present on bottom.
Holster is an excellent black bridle leather holster made to accommodate the large “Army” size Colt revolvers. The holster “pocket” measures about 12” along its front edge. Holster is made of two pieces, a large piece forming the “pocket” and the other being the flap. A latch tab is sewn to the flap and remains unbroken. A brass finial is mounted on the holster. A wide belt loop sewn and riveted to the reverse. Retains its leather plug closing the end of the holster. No maker’s marks.
This is a terrific example of a Civil War cavalry sword-belt rig. [jet] [ph:L]
