Brown buff leather belt in good condition. Leather is a little dry causing the inside seam in one small section to split but the rest is solid. Belt plate and keeper have matching benchmark numbers of 491. Frog for artillery short sword is in good condition as well. Tucked inside the frog is a modern note that reads “This artillery short-sword belt came from an old Detroit estate- reportedly the family of David H. Strother from Virginia- he had served as Col. – 3rd West Virginia Cavalry + had saved many war souvenirs.”

David H. Strother was 45 years old when he was commissioned a Captain in the Adjutant Generals Department on March 6, 1862. He was discharged to accept promotion to Lieutenant-Colonel of the 3rd West Virginia Cavalry on June 1, 1862. He was promoted Colonel on July 18, 1863 and resigned September 1, 1864. He was promoted to Brigadier-General on August 23, 1865.
