Very nice, clean cap box that exhibits only light wear throughout.
The outer flap is in excellent condition with a strong embossed “USN” in an oval and a latch tab that is solid.
Inner flap has both ears with two strong markings. The first is “METZGER PHILA.” and the other is “H. H. HARTZELL, SUB-INSPECTOR / U. S. ORD. DEPT.”
Interior is stuffed with paper to help hold shape. There is no fleece but the pick is present. Interior body is perfect. Bottom of box has brass pear shaped finial.
Reverse has both belt loops. Loops show light wear with some small amounts of surface finish loss.
These are Civil War cap boxes purchased after the war by Francis Bannerman who then stamped them with the “USN” and tried to sell them back to the government.
