This cartridge box is an example of the "Pattern 1861” infantry cartridge box. Outer flap exhibits some scuffing and minor crazing. Oval “US” box plate is secured to the face of the box. Closing tab is complete and unbroken. Tab is sewn and riveted to the underside of the flap. The inner flap is marked “WATE__OWN / ARSENAL / 1864” and is very nice condition. This flap covers two cartridge tins that remain. This inner flap retains both “ears” that are tightly attached. The implement pouch is present and also in very good condition. The stitching on the body of the box is tight and unbroken. Belt straps are sewn and riveted. Brass finial on the bottom. Iron buckles were sewn and riveted; both remain tightly attached. Waxy residue in spots from leather preservative.
Box measures approximately 7” x 1 ¾” x 5” (for the .58 cal. elongated ball). The two tin inserts held musket cartridges. The brass cartridge box plate is in good condition. [jet]
