A nicely marked example of the regulation Civil War U.S. cavalry cartridge box for carbine ammunition. Constructed of black leather that retains good color, it has a good finish with just minute crazing and light wrinkles, and very little surface loss. The outer flap, latch tab, inner flap, implement pouch with flap and tab, and belt loops and buckles are all present and secure. The maker’s name, J. Davy / Newark N.J., appears at the bottom front of the box, just below the rivet and stitching for the latch tab. Davy had many government contracts for leather gear, including for 60,000 sets of cavalry accouterments in 1863. The interior wood block in this box is a reproduction, but helps the box keep its proper shape. The latch tab shows a small glue repair on one edge of the finial hole. This is a nice regulation carbine box for a cavalry collection. [sr]
