Militia style black painted canvas knapsack with wooden frame with overall size of 14.75" x 13.5" x 4". Front flap which covers the top of the frame appears to be of leather with a canvas lining on the inside, back, sides , bottom and inner flaps all appear to be black painted canvas. Opens to reveal two inner flaps tied shut with red, white, and blue striped cotton strings. One string is torn from the flap, but tied to the other side. One closure strap is present and two of the buckles on the bottom edges of this knapsack are actually stitched when open. Outside front of knapsack is marked "36" in 2.5" white numbers with "SEP. CO" in 1.5" white letters beneath (this being a post war unit designation). Front flap is marked in pencil "Ed Marcellus, 7 36" and back inside is marked in pencil "36 E Marsellus". In very good condition.
