In shape and size this bag is similar to the one issued by the United States Government. However, this bag is made of rubberized canvas instead of japaned or painted canvas. Unlike the issue haversack, this bag does not appear to have had an inner cloth lining as there are no buttons on the inside for anchoring it in place. Also, the outer flap is held closed by a Goodyear rubber button instead of the strap and roller buckle of the issued pattern haversack.

The body of the bag meas. approx. 12.00 inches across by 12.50 inches high. The strap is re-enforced and anchored to the bag by two rivets on each side. These are the same rivets encountered on bayonet scabbards and cartridge boxes. The strap itself meas. approx. 1.50 inches wide by 41.00 inches long. The outer flap meas. approx. 4.50 inches from the top fold to the bottom edge. The buttonhole on the flap is re-enforced with an extra strip of rubber. The button is also sewn to a re-enforced base. The thread holding the button in place looks to be new.

The condition of the bag is good. There is some loss of surface rubber along the top fold and bottom edge. These areas also have small wear holes in the canvas. The top flap has a 1.00 inch tear along the left side of the fold line followed by a small hole. This is nothing major and should not get any worse. A bag of this style is shown and discussed on page 194 of “India-Rubber and Gutta-Percha In the Civil War” by Mike Woshner, 1999, O’Donnell Publications.
