This large sturdy holster has an “E. Gaylord / Chicopee / Mass.” stamp partially visible on the belt loop. Gaylord was one of the largest suppliers of military accouterments to the government and held numerous contracts. The holster is constructed of black leather with a full military flap, belt loop secured with stitching and three rivets. The toe plug and latch tab are in place and secure. All seams are tight. The finish is very good. The body is generally smooth. The flap, as is common, shows some crazing from flexing. There is a small bit of flaking at the forward lower edge of the flap fold, which is also common, and some minor edge chips on the flap. The attachment of the latch tab by rivet and semicircle of stitching marks it as made around 1863, noted by Meadows, who notes that it would fit both the older large dragoon revolvers and other large frame revolvers like the double-action Starr that would not fit conventional holsters intended for Colts and Remingtons, though even an 1880 report from Allegheny Arsenal on older holsters refers to it as the dragoon pistol holster.
This is a scarce holster in exceptional condition. [sr]
