Presented here is an original, heavy duty, thick, black leather carbine scabbard in very good condition utilized by the U.S. cavalry during the Indian Wars of the 1870s and 1880s. The straight, thick, leather scabbard measures 31” long by 7” wide and tapers down to 2½” at the plug. Device has two leather strap loops riveted to the upper area where the carbine stock would rest. Fitted through the loop is an 18” long, narrow leather strap with a steel harness buckle and clasp stitched at one end. Strap functioned to secure the scabbard to the trooper’s saddle. This strap has a weak point (a 1/4” tear) just up from the riveted strap loop and also has an old stitching repair. Strap tip has a small inspector’s stamp “T.C.” A second steel ring clasp is riveted to the scabbard. Scabbard’s upper-arced edge has a single line of tooling. Marked at the top of scabbard is the clear government stamping “ROCK ISLAND / ARSENAL / EHS.” Leather scabbard body has overall light crazing along with minor dings and dents, else very good. An unusual addition to any Indian War weapon display or collection.
