Lightweight but very warm, this hand-sewn knee-length mantle is styled with a round neckline and curved lower edge. Trimming gives the illusion of a second layer over the shoulders and upper back, but the garment is a single layer. Slit openings for the arms in the side front seams are concealed by the trimming. The mantle closes in the front with a double row of self-fabric covered buttons and cord loops. There is a single brass hook-and-eye at the neckline, and a hanger loop at the back neck.
The fabric is a very lightweight wool or wool/silk blend. The lining is lightweight iridescent copper and blue silk quilted to wool batting. The neckline and shoulder seams are piped. The mantle is trimmed with rows of lightweight gold silk velvet cut in a zig-zag pattern. An elaborate two-tone twisted fringe in gold and reddish-brown finishes the lower edges and creates the illusion of a cape in the back.
