This folding lantern has the original Mica windows, Japanned finish and a painted gold stencil design. The item is made to collapses down to a small pocket sized square. When opened the lantern measures approx. 3.00 inches wide x 3.50 deep x 5.25 inches tall. Two sides have windows with a gold stenciled linear design. The third side is solid with the same gold designs around the edges and “MINOR’S PATENT JAN. 24, 1865” at center. The decoration has worn slightly but visible throughout and the patent information is totally readable. The back panel is solid with a looped handle at one edge. This back panel swings open to expose the inside of the lantern. Just inside the door is a tin protecting shield that keeps any wind from blowing out the candle. At bottom there is a lever that when pushed, brings the candleholder to the side of the protection panel for filling and lighting. Once done, moving the lever again brings the candle back to the center of the lantern. Attached to the inside of the back door are two small holders for extra candles and matches. A lone candle still remains in the holder.

The U.S. Patent Office issued Patent #46,011 on January 24,1865 to John A. Minor who was the inventor of this interesting little item.

Overall the item is in good condition. Some oxidation has occurred on the top. There is some minor wear and scratching on the outside, and windows have cracked in areas, but nothing that would seriously detract from it.  [sl]
