Presented here is an original variation of a Model 1859 McClellan officer's saddle attributed to a member of the 1st Pennsylvania Artillery. The saddle, though not identified to a specific Civil War officer, is from an auction grouping that emanated from a period home associated to a 1st Pennsylvania artillery officer. No further information is available on the individual.

This saddle was comfortable to use and does exhibit service use. Saddle is in very good overall condition and retains its high domed, full leather seat covering, leather quarterstraps, rigging, double sweat leathers, leather girth, stirrup frames, leather hoods, pommel and cantle mortises. Built upon the standard McClellan tree, the two halves of the padded seat are covered in quality-grained black leather and center stitched from the top of the pommel to the top of the cantle. Thick black harness leather skirts are attached to the tree to protect both the horse and the rider.

Original horsehair padding lies underneath the saddle seat area. Cantle and pommel retain their black leather cover in good condition with stitching strong and tight. Cloak and valise leather straps are missing and no maker's stamping is visible on the saddle. Overall, the saddle leather is smooth, tight and supple with just few scattered areas of light seam separation. This wonderful M1859 McClellan commissioned officer's saddle, attributed to a 1st Pennsylvania Artillery officer from the Civil War, presents a great opportunity to acquire an original piece of military equestrian equipment.
