This can meas. approx. 4.75 inches tall and 4.25 inches wide. Top has small circular opening that meas. approx. 2.00 inches across. Exposed tin is clean with only light discoloration. Nice white paper label on front with 0.25 inch white letters on a green backing that reads “FRESH TOMATOES. JOHN W. STOUT, NEW YORK.” Center artwork is a colored lithograph of a large tomato on the vine. Back of label is white with red six-pointed star design. Label goes completely around the can and has light dirt on the surface. Overall there does not appear to be any paper loss. Scattered over the face of the label are some dark spots of discoloration. These are heaviest on one side of the can only. This type of can is often dug in Civil War camps and is seldom encountered with the label intact.
