This brass match safe was called the, “go to bed” matchbox, because of the small finial on the top which allowed one to place a lighted match into, place on the mantle, then have 30 seconds to get into bed after putting out the candle. This eliminated the risk of taking a lighted candle near the bed.
Match safe has an embossed filigree floral design on top of lid. Underside is marked, “PRINCE ALBERT’S SAFETY BOX / 100 PATENT VESTA LIGHTS”. Grooves on base were a rough surface for striking matches. Brass has retained original gilt with just a few scattered dark spots.
Measures 2” high x 1 ¼” at base. [sl]
