This nicely inscribed silver plate oval box has a push-button latch and a red interior top and bottom that shows some wear around the sides. The box measures about 2 ½ inches by 1 7/8 inches and fits the general category of snuff box, though it could have been used for a number of purposes. The lid is professionally engraved in script: “Susan Slayford” (or perhaps “Hayford”) with some flourishes underneath. We see no other markings, but it is certainly nineteenth century. The hinge is tight and latch is functional. The engraving is elegant and the condition of the box is excellent, just some superficial scratches and wear from handling. Valentine’s Day is coming up. This might be an opportune gift for a significant other who thinks you spend too much time online looking at Civil War material. [sr] [ph:L}
