C1880’s photo of the GAR members and band members. Faint lettering on the large brass drum in front reads, “Jas. A. Garfield Post #4 / GAR / Newark NJ / Drum and Fife Corps”. Photo measures 20” x 16 3/8” on a mount measuring 21 7/8” x 17 7/8”. Wonderful view of GAR veterans in full uniform with ribbons and GAR officers and membership badges visible. The drum and fife musicians are wearing US Model 1881 dress helmets of the type worm by American troops during the Spanish American War, and wearing the musician’s jackets of the period.
In a period gold gilt frame. Minor areas of “chipping” to frame. Properly matted a nice view of soldiers from the Garden State! [ws]
