Image shows Castle Thunder which was located between 17th Street and 18th Street on E Cary Street in Richmond, Virginia. It was a former tobacco warehouse, located on what was known as Tobacco Row. During the Civil War it was used as a prison for non-military personnel such as spies, political prisoners and those charged with treason.

The image shows the building from the front corner giving a good view of the front, side and back ell. Also visible is a white board fence that surrounded the building.

Image is clear with good contrast. Mount has chip at lower left and upper right corner as well as a faint crease running across the upper left. Image and mount have some light to moderate surface dirt. Bottom edge of the image is marked “H. G. DeBURLO PHOTOGRAPHER, NO. 1029 CHESTNUT ST. PHILA.”

Image is housed in a very attractive original period frame with an interior gold gilt border. Frame is in good condition and meas. approx.14.75 x 13.50. Back has wood panel with four pins holding it in place. Could use a few more. Wire is present so the item is ready to hang on the wall.  [ad]
