Image shows John S. D. Everlyn, John S. D’Evelyn or John S. Develyn of Company H. He wears a dark civilian suit with white shirt and dark tie. Bottom of the mount has a printed caption that reads “JOHN S. D. EVERLYN, CO. H.”

Image has good clarity and passable contrast. Mount and paper have light surface dirt.

Reverse has photographer’s mark for MORRILL…LOWELL. Period ink inscription reads “JOHN S. D’EVELYN, 105 SIXTH ST, LOWELL, MASS.  CO. H, 2ND REGT N. H. V.” At bottom is a pencil notation that reads “DON’T FIND HIM IN REGISTER.”

The soldier does not show up on any of the online Civil War databases under any of his names nor does he show up in the 2nd New Hampshire regimental history. His widow DOES show up on the pension rolls as “ROSE A. D’EVELYN” and as having received a pension for his service with the 2nd New Hampshire.

The only information that could be found on the soldier is a small announcement of his death in the May 12, 1886 edition of the Boston Globe which says;

“JOHN S. DEVELYN a well-known insurance agent, died at1 o’clock this morning at his home on Sixth St. The deceased was 44 years of age. He was a member of Mechanic’s Lodge of Odd Fellows, and was also connected with the Masonic fraternity, the Knights of Pythias and the Legion of Honor. Mr. Develyn served in a New Hampshire regiment during the war, and was a member of the New Hampshire Veteran Association of Lowell.”

The 2nd was a hard fought regiment seeing action at 1st Bull Run, Williamsburg, Oak Grove, Gaines’ Mill, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg where the 2nd bore the brunt of the assault on the Peach Orchard. After Gettysburg the 2nd garrisoned Point Lookout for a time before returning to the army to fight at Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  [ad]
