Due to the long exposure time of 19th Century cameras it was very difficult to get an animal to stand still long enough to avoid a blurry movement. This photographer not only accomplished keeping this dog still but he did it while the dog was standing on three legs with its tail up and mouth open.

Image has excellent clarity and contrast. Paper and mount have light surface dirt.

Reverse has photographer’s imprint for A. HESLER…CHICAGO. A note in period ink reads “DON’T YOU THING THIS IS A PHOTOGRAPHIC VICTORY? TO TAKE A DOG ON THREE LEGS, TAIL UP +MOUTH OPEN- AND GET NO WORSE FOCUS? I THINK IT’S A GOOD THING. WAS DONE AT OUR GALLERY.”

A rare and unique image.  [ad]
