Nice outdoor view of the infamous “Castle Thunder” prison in Richmond. This image shows the building and the high wooden fence around its courtyard. Several Union soldiers can be seen standing in front of the fence and give a good idea as to its height. Contrast is good but a little light toward the center of the image. Photographers imprint reads “REED BROTHERS…LAWRENCE, MASS.” Back also has some collector information in pencil.
Castle Thunder was in the tobacco warehouse district of Richmond and was originally used for that purpose. During the war the Confederates used the building to hold political prisoners and spies. Dr. Mary Walker, who was the first woman to receive the Medal of Honor, was held here for a time.
