This is a nice clean and clear CDV of Philip Sheridan in the uniform of a Major General. He is posed seated with one arm resting on his knee and the other on the arm of the chair. He wears a dark double-breasted frock coat with black velvet collars and cuffs and Major General’s shoulder straps. He also wears matching dark trousers.

The bottom of the mount has a period pencil inscription that reads GEN. SHERIDAN.” Mount corners are slightly clipped.

Image is clear with good contrast.

The reverse has a gold embossed view of the Capitol building and an imprint for ALEX. GARDNER-PHOTOGRAPHER TO THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC.

Philip Henry Sheridan was born March 6, 1831. He graduated from West Point in 1853 ranked 34th out of a class of 52.

At the out-break of the Civil War Sheridan was to be assigned to the 13th US Infantry but in route to his assignment he was detailed by Major General Henry Halleck as a staff officer. Sheridan eventually landed the command of an infantry division. His career was noted for his rapid rise to Major General and his close association with General-in-Chief Ulysses S. Grant, who transferred Sheridan from command of an infantry division in the Western Theater to lead the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac in the East. In 1864, he defeated Confederate forces in the Shenandoah Valley and his destruction of the economic infrastructure of the Valley was one of the first uses of scorched earth tactics in the war. In 1865, his cavalry pursued Gen. Robert E. Lee and was instrumental in forcing his surrender at Appomattox.

Sheridan fought in later years in the Indian Wars of the Great Plains. Both as a soldier and private citizen, he was instrumental in the development and protection of Yellowstone National Park. In 1883, Sheridan was appointed General-in-Chief of the U.S. Army, and in 1888 he was promoted to the rank of General of the Army during the term of President Grover Cleveland.

He died on August 5, 1888. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
