Carte de visite of Assistant Surgeon Peter Costello of the 14th Maine Infantry. Full standing view in uniform. Wearing unadorned nine-button frock. Card mount is good with photographer’s imprint on back – E. H. McKenney, Biddeford, ME. Modern pencil identification and service information on rear; states that ID was made from a signed duplicate from the collection of B.C. Hayes. Clear photo with good contrast and only slightest foxing.
Peter Costello was a 23 year old resident of Saco, ME when he enlisted as a Private on 9/24/62. On that date he mustered into Co. D, 14th Maine Infantry. Listed as detailed Carrollton, LA, and detailed 1862 as a hospital warden. Promoted to Hospital Steward 2/6/64 and transferred from Co. D to Field & Staff; promoted to Asst. Surgeon on 6/15/65. Mustered out 8/28/65. [jet]
