View is a vignette of Private Fred S. Morse wearing a frock coat and white shirt.
Image is clear with very good contrast.
Reverse has a period ink inscription that reads “FRED MORSE / CO. F 12. N.H. VOLS.” There is also a photographer’s mark for J. L. KIMBALL… CONCORD, N.H.
Fred S. Morse was born in London, July 13. 1845. He enlisted at age 18 in the 12th New Hampshire on August 15, 1862. He was mustered out at Richmond on June 21, 1865. The 12th’s regimental history says of him:
“Morse was the youngest member of his company. A mere boy in appearance as well as years, he was selected as "marker " early in the service, carrying a small flag instead of a gun until the last year of the war, when he acted as orderly for Colonel Potter, commanding brigade. He was with the regiment in most of its marches and battles, and although not in the line of battle, used to do some fighting now and then, exchanging shots with rebel sharpshooters! Married July 9, 1873, to Martha Cummings, of Chelsea, Mass., where he has resided for several years. He was always full of life and fun, ready and resolute, and game to the end.” [ad]
