What better way to express one’s patriotism than by including an image of the President and his family in one’s own photo album? This carte-de-visite was produced as a heavily retouched composite view using published images of Mary, Robert, and the well-known image of Lincoln himself looking at a photo album with Tad. It was an inexpensive alternative to a Brady or Gardner image taken from life, and more readily available. The publisher has included a caption at bottom, but wisely omitted any backmark to avoid copyright problems. These “album fillers” are a collecting category of their own and in subject matter cover a wide range, from the patriotic (as here,) to the artistic, and even the risqué. [SR]
