CDV view of Lieutenant Colonel Melvin Beal posed leaning against a chair. He wears a dark double-breasted frock coat with lieutenant colonel’s shoulder straps and light trousers with a dark thin leg stripe. He also wears his sword belt and sash with a Model 1860 cavalry saber at his side. His right hand rests on the back of chair and also holds his slouch hat with infantry insignia with a regimental number “6” at center.
Image has excellent clarity and contrast. Mount and paper have only minor surface dirt.
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for HALL… LAWRENCE (MA.). Reverse also has a nice period ink ID “MELVIN BEAL, LT. Col. 6 REGT MASS VOL LAWRENCE.”
Melvin Beal was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on November 1, 1832. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Company F, 6th Massachusetts Militia on April 22, 1861 for three months service. During that time the regiment helped to defend Washington, D.C. Beal was promoted to captain on May 6, 1861 and was mustered out with his Company on August 2, 1861.

In early September of 1862 the 6th was called into Federal service again. By this time Beal had been promoted to lieutenant colonel on May 27, 1862. The 6th was accepted for 9 months service and were assigned to the 7th Corps in the Department of Virginia. They were stationed at Fortress Monroe and also took part in the siege of Suffolk. Beal was mustered out with his regiment on June 3, 1863.
The 6th was Federalized once again for 100 days on July 20, 1864 and served with the 22nd Corps in the Defenses of Washington. They were mustered out for the last time on October 27, 1864.
After the war Beal served as a state legislator and as chief of the Lawrence Fire Department. He was also an active member of the Needham Post #39 of the GAR.
Melvin Beal died in Lawrence, Massachusetts on February 23, 1916 and is buried there in Bellevue Cemetery. [ad]
