CDV is a three-quarter sitting view of a Union soldier in uniform named Charles H. Flanders.  He is wearing a dark colored frock coat with turn buckles on the shoulders and Captain’s stripes. He has dark colored vest and trousers.

Reverse of image is marked with the photographer’s imprint, “HASKINS & SWEETSER, PHOTOGRAPHERS, HUTCHINS BLOCK, HOLYOKE, MASS., ADDITIONAL COPIES CAN BE OBTAINED FROM THIS NEGATIVE, IF DESIRED”.  There is a handwritten inscription on the reverse which reads, “CHARLES H. FLANDERS”.

Image is clear with good contrast. Some light surface dirt is present.

Charles H. Flanders was born in Hopkinton, NH and at the time of the Civil War was a resident of Holyoke, MA where he worked as a machinist. He enlisted on July 14, 1863 as a Private. On August 14, 1863 he mustered into Co. “C” MA 3rd Heavy Artillery. He was eventually promoted to a Sergeant. He was mustered out on September 18, 1865 at Washington, DC. Sergt. Flanders was a member of G.A.R. Post #71 (Kilpatrick) in Holyoke, MA and died on February 21, 1918.
