Bust view image of Mahlon G. Bailey in a dark civilian suit. Image is signed in period ink at bottom “M. G. BAILEY.”

Contrast and clarity are good. Mount and paper are also good.

Reverse has a photographers imprint for HOAG & QUICK’S ART PALACE… CINCINNATI, OHIO.

An 1886 biography of Bailey reads:

“Mahlon G. Bailey was born in Clinton County, Ohio, May 1, 1840, and is by occupation an accountant and bookkeeper. Enlisted in Company D, 2nd Ohio Volunteers, April 17, 1861, a three months regiment. A termination of service he reenlisted in Company F, 81st Ohio Volunteers, August 27, 1861, was promoted from private to 2nd lieutenant December 3, 1861; was in battles of Bull Run, Shiloh and other engagements; disabled in the line of duty by his horse falling with him; resigned September 5, 1862, with a view of change of service to the navy. Was appointed Master’s Mate in the Navy on January 9, 1863, and joined the US steamer CURLEW, belonging to the Ohio and Mississippi flotilla; participated in all the engagements of that vessel, and frequently in command of parties landed for raiding purposes; was promoted to ensign and made executive officer July 24, 1864; subsequently transferred to the US steamer BENTON, ironclad and flagship of the Mississippi Squadron, and from thence placed in command of US steamer SPRINGFIELD, in which he served until the close of the war; was honorably discharged from the service October 28, 1865. Is a member of Phil Sheridan Post, G.A.R., at San Jose, Cal., of which city he is a resident.”
