Vignette bust view of Albert H. C. Jewett wearing a dark single-breasted frock coat.

Image has good clarity and contrast; however there is some light foxing along the lower edge and one side and the mount has light surface dirt and light wear from age.

Reverse has no photographer’s imprint. Near the top in period ink is “A. H. C. JEWETT 1ST LT. 4TH N.H.V.” also at bottom in period in is “LT. JEWETT 4th N.H.V.”  Image ID is confirmed by several on-line photographs.

Albert Henry Clay Jewett was born in Meredith, New Hampshire on December 22, 1841.

Jewett enlisted as a Sergeant in Company D, 4th New Hampshire Infantry on September 18, 1861. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on November 5, 1862 and 1st Lieutenant of Company E on March 14, 1863.

The 4th moved around quite a bit during its service. It spent most of its time with the 10th Corps in the Department of the South. Its first major action came at Pocotaligo, South Carolina. The regiment then moved to take part in the siege of Charleston where it as engaged at Fort Wagner.

Moving to Virginia the regiment saw heavy action at Drewry’s Bluff on May 16, 1864. During this action Lieutenant Jewett suffered from heat stroke and was sent to a hospital where he was discharged from the service on September 26, 1864.

Jewett returned to New Hampshire, finished his education, and married Marietta Merrill in June of 1868. Dr. Jewett practiced dentistry in Laconia until the family moved to Washington, D.C. There he worked for the Pension Department at the Department of the Interior.

Dr. Albert H. C. Jewett died on December 14, 1898 in Washington, DC, at the early age of 56, and was laid to rest at Union Cemetery, Laconia, New Hampshire.  [ad]
