Very nice vignette bust view of Joseph Wingate of the 4^th New Hampshire Infantry wearing a dark frock coat with 1^st Lieutenant’s shoulder straps.

Image has excellent clarity and contrast and the paper and mount are very clean. However, there is one small spot of dirt on the subject’s right forehead but this does not detract from the image.

Reverse has photographer’s imprint for WILLIAM P. HOIT…CONCORD, N.H. There is also a canceled orange 2 cent stamp and some collector information in pencil that gives the ID and states that the image came from a 4^th N. H. album.

Joseph Wingate was born in Berwick, Maine in 1839.

When the Civil War broke out Wingate was living in Rochester, New Hampshire. It was there on September 5, 1861 that he enlisted as a Private in Company A, 4^th New Hampshire Infantry. He would later be promoted to Corporal.

The 4^th moved around quite a bit during its service. It spent most of its time with the 10^th Corps in the Department of the South. Its first major action came at Pocotaligo, South Carolina where Wingate was wounded. The regiment then moved to take part in the siege of Charleston where it as engaged at Fort Wagner. During the siege of Charleston Corporal Wingate received the Gilmore medal for “gallant and meritorious conduct during operations before Charleston.”

In May of 1864 the regiment moved to Virginia where it saw heavy action at Drewry’s Bluff and where Wingate was wounded for a second time. The regiment continued its campaigning seeing action at Bermuda Hundred, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.

In January 1865 the 4^th was part of the Union attack on Fort Fisher which it finally captured on the 15th. On February 17, 1865 Corporal Wingate received a commission to 1^st Lieutenant of Company K. He held that position until he was discharged on August 23, 1865.

Joseph Wingate died in Rochester, New Hampshire on May 29, 1924 and is buried there in Rochester Cemetery.    [ad]
