Nice view of Coffin as a Captain. Image is very good and very clear. Coffin sports a heavy beard and moustache and is shown from the waist up in a frock coat with Captains shoulder boards. Inscribed in period ink along the bottom is “Fred F. B. Coffin, Capt. Co. K 62nd U.S.C.T.” There is no photographer’s back mark.
Fred F. B. Coffin was born in North Carolina but was living in Minnesota when he enlisted on August 19, 1862 as a Sergeant in Co. D of the 9th Minnesota Infantry. His time with this unit was spent on guard duty in Minnesota. On December 29, 1863 Coffin was discharged to accept a commission as 1st Lieutenant of Co. D, 62nd U.S.C.T. With this regiment Coffin served in Louisiana and Texas. One of the battles he was in was the last one of the war at Palmetto Ranch and Whites Ranch on May 12-13, 1865. While with the regiment he was promoted to Captain July 1, 1864 and Major March 13, 1865. He resigned on October 9, 1865.
