Full standing view of Lewis Wall as a Sergeant posing in front of a painted backdrop that depicts a camp scene with tents, cannon and a mounted soldier. Wall wears an issued Cavalry shell jacket with Sergeant chevrons, light trousers with NCO leg stripes and a forage cap with crossed sabers. At his waist he wears a sash with a sword belt, shoulder strap and scabbard for his saber which is drawn, point down, in front of him.. Tucked in his belt is a Remington pistol. Image is clean but contrast is a little light around the edges. However, the subject is good and clear. Ink inscription at bottom reads “L. P. Wall 7th Cav.” No photographer’s imprint on back. 

Lewis P. Wall was 22 years old and living in Burlington, Iowa when he enlisted as 3rd Sergeant in Co. H, 7th Iowa Cavalry. During his enlistment he was promoted twice. Once on August 23, 1864 to 2nd Sergeant and again on January 12, 1866 to 1st Sergeant. He was finally discharged on May 17, 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He died on September 15, 1906 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery His records at Arlington say he also served in Co. G, 1st Nebraska Infantry as a Corporal from June 30, 1861 to August 29, 1862 when he was discharged for disability. With the 1st Nebraska Wall saw service heavy fighting at Fort Donelson, the 2nd day at Shiloh and the Siege of Corinth.  The 7th Iowa was scattered to different posts and spent their time fighting Indians in many small encounters.
