Full seated view of an unknown Union soldier and wife.
The soldier wears a dark frock coat with Sergeant’s chevrons on each sleeve and a veteran’s service stripes on each sleeve. He also wears light trousers with a dark NCO leg stripe. His frock coat is open at the midriff to expose a dark military vest and a white shirt beneath.
The standing woman wears a medium colored dress with a small check pattern. The dress has a white lace collar and long sleeves. At her waist is a dark belt while at her throat is a small brooch. She wears a dark snood on her head.
Image has good clarity and contrast with a small ink spot between the couple. Card also has a faint fold seam running across the center. Mount and paper are otherwise good.
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for HOSE’S…WATERTOWN, N.Y. Reverse also has a modern ink inscription that reads “JOHN & LIBBY SMITH.”
No doubt this image was taken while the soldier was home on his veteran furlough. [ad]
