This is a waist up view of a Union soldier. He is dressed in a regulation great coat with his dark blue vest visible. He also wears a forage cap with the number “14” on the front. Brass items have been gilted and his cheeks and lips lightly tinted. Typical oxidation is present around the edge of the oval mat. Image, mat, glass, and frame are all in fine condition.

Gutta percha “Union” case has an embossed bee hive and farm tool design on both the front and back. Two of the eight corners show very minor chips. One hinge is loose while the other has broken from the hard case material on one side. The case does still open and close properly and there are no other visible cracks. Maker’s label is present under image; “A.B. Chapman”. Case measures approximately 3.5” by 3.75”.  [jet] [ph:L]
