US 3.67-INCH JAMES SHELL FROM 3RD LOUISIANA REDAN AT VICKSBURG

$595.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: R20159

This fired example is in excellent condition. The upper body is fairly smooth with just the lightest scattered pitting. Still present in the nose is the brass James percussion fuse. The tin sleeve sabot which covered the “bird cage” at bottom ripped off in firing which made this type shell dangerous to supporting infantry. The shell is marked in two places with small white ovals, one is at the base of the nose and the other is on what remains of the sabot. These marks were for the digger’s identification.

As stated above, this item was recovered in the redan of the 3rd Louisiana at Vicksburg.

This shell was meant for use in the James rifle.
