[See Mullinax, p.65, plate 113] Recovered at Chancellorsville, VA [scratched inscription on reverse: “Chan / Oct. 1955 / 12th Corps Line”]. Die stamped, “gold” colored brass face, with brass hooks soldered on the reverse. Named by earlier collectors due to their resemblance to a sardine can. This particular plate features a double-stamped “CS” mis-strike. Its face retains traces of “gold”, and has been cleaned slightly Also nicely retains its shape, despite three small light cracks on the outer edge. On the reverse, one hook is gone, another has snapped, and the third is solidly in place. Otherwise VG, and highly attractive. “Sardine” CS buckles are extremely scarce, and seldom found with any extant reverse hooks . Superb Confederate “Chancellorsville” collectible.
