At the beginning of the Civil war, the State of New York issued brass waist belt plates and cartridge box plate to its first volunteer infantry regiments deploying for field service. This excavated specimen, which came from the Fredericksburg, VA area, is the face or SHELL only from an oval SNY box plate in good overall condition. Has no lead or hooks. Face of this die-struck, oval brass plate shell bears the letters “S N Y” and is double-bordered along the outer edges. Never cleaned. Shell is slightly concave and also bears “158” stamped into face above the letter “N”. Shows traces of accumulated surface grime. No cracks or breaks. Comes in its own riker display case with a modern paper label.
