This seldom seen, excavated Civil War artifact is a wonderful equestrian example of a brass, Confederate-marked, triangle-shaped shield device. Used to decorate a southerner’s saddle pommel, this specimen is of die-struck sheet brass and measures 1½” high by 1½” at its widest point. The shield displays two, 3/8” high embossed letters “C S” that are centered in the shield just beneath a small rectangular cutout. Each of the three corners of the shield feature a small diameter hole for nailing the device to the saddle pommel. Two of the three corner openings have closed up due to oxidation buildup, third opening is fine. Shield face, pitted in areas, still retains traces of old soil. The raised letters “CS” are in very good condition with just slight edge pitting on the lower portion of the letter “S”. Shield has acquired a fine, chocolate-brown patina overall. A fine opportunity for the Civil War cavalry collector to fill out a collection with an original “CS” marked saddle shield device.
