RELIC, U.S. ISSUED, FEDERAL CAVALRY CARBINE SLING BUCKLE & TIP

$100.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: R20004

Presented here, in excavated condition, is a relic, brass, two-prong buckle and its original ‘batwing’ tip that was once part of a Union cavalryman’s cavalry carbine sling rig. Recovered in Winchester, Virginia sometime after the war, this two-piece artifact bears the maker’s stamp on the buckle back that reads “CHICOPEE / MASS       U S      T J SHEPARD.” Some parts of the original stamping (letters T J) have been eroded by rust and time, but stamp is still quite visible. No snap hook or leather sling. Buckle, which is just slightly bent on one edge, retains both its clasps or prongs to secure to the leather sling. Issued to and used by Federal cavalry prior to and during the Civil War, this regulation, buckle and ‘batwing’ tip features a smooth, hard coat of rust overall and wears a pleasing medium brown patina. Batwing has all four of its rivets attached. A fine and pleasing artifact for display in any leather or cavalry collection.
