Rectangular plate with brass keeper attached to one end. Raised decoration at center is a spread-winged eagle with a patriotic shield on his chest inside of an applied silver wreath that extends above the eagles wings. Reverse has a small tongue and is marked with the numbers “211”. Keeper is marked “211” as well.

Plate was recovered from City Point, Virginia, after the explosion on August 9, 1864, that was a result of Confederate sabotage. Confederate Secret Service agent John Maxwell has smuggled a bomb with a timed fuse aboard an ammunition barge. It caused a tremendous explosion that shook the city and caused much damage.   [SM]
