This is a relic condition saber bayonet recovered near the Antietam battlefield. The bayonet features an iron blade, iron cross guard, and a brass handle. The tip of the blade is broken off leaving just over 12” of blade remaining. The cross guard measures 4.25” from top to bottom. The ribbed brass handle is 4.25” in length. The iron locking stud and spring are still present. All iron parts are rusted and uncoated, but solid. The brass handle is still dirt encrusted but has a dark green patina showing through. “Antietam” has been painted on the blade.
According to Jerry Janzen, author of “Bayonets from Janzen's Notebook”, this bayonet is associated with the Brazilian Navy Rifle which was produced in Belgium, however the bayonets were made in Germany. Non-dug specimens show the S&K (Schnitzler & Kirschbaum Solingen) stamp on their blades. These saber bayonets actually fit on a number of Civil War era rifles. However its claim to fame is that it fits the military style Colt Revolving Rifle and may have been so used. Shipments of the Brazilian Model 1855 Naval Rifle (and presumably their bayonets) were diverted from Brazil early in the Civil War. Some 6.000 weapons of this type were purchased by US agents in 1861 to accommodate the US Ordnance Department's need for longarms. Most of these muskets were issued to the State of Ohio in 1861 and saw service with Ohio soldiers throughout the war.
This comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from Ian Workman, owner of American Civil War Relics. [JET]
