Recovered Hotchkiss shell has been cleaned and coated in shellac. Shell is complete with fuse adapter, sabot, and base cup, with case-shot balls inside. Deactivated through the bottom. Lead sabot exhibits outstanding rifling lands and grooves which indicate that it was fired from a James rifle. Patent mark is still visible on the base cup and reads “HOTCHKISS PATENT OCT 9 186(?) / MAY 14 1861”. Shell is in excellent condition. Location of recovery unknown. [jt]
