This is an excavated specimen and this 6-pdr. size appears somewhat more “egg-shaped” than the more common 3” Schenkl projectiles. Interestingly, this is the type that has six recessed “ribs” running down the lower portion of the body. Most Schenkl patterns feature raised ribs. This has a threaded fuse hole but no fuse. The shell has been cleaned and coated long ago, and could probably stand to be recoated. A silver paint identification has been applied by noted author/collector Mac Mason. It reads, “C.S. 3 5/8” – 6 PNDR. SCHENKLE SHELL WEIGHT 11 LBS [scroll]”.
A very nice and displayable “Mac Mason” artillery shell. [jet]
