This relic is an “SNY” (State of New York) buckle. Only the lead remains, the brass face and iron belt hooks deteriorated in the ocean long ago. This is an excellent example from this wreck site since there is very little loss on the edges and the “SNY” letters are well defined. Coated and preserved.

The recovery site is from a coastal shipwreck. The identity has long been disputed. Apparently it is either the GOVERNOR or the SUWANEE.  It is a wooden hulled sidewheel steamer approximately 22.8 miles off Little River Inlet (South Carolina, North Carolina line). The GOVERNOR was a Federal transport lost during the Civil War, while the SUWANEE was lost on December 4, 1866, carrying arms and ammunition for the Mexican Republic.  [jet]
