Offered here is an excavated piece from a model 1841 “Mississippi” rifle. The relic is the brass nose cap/barrel band with sling swivel from the muzzle end of a Mississippi rifle.
The interesting thing is that this is from a Confederate altered rifle. J.H. Happoldt of Charleston, South Carolina was hired to alter and repair weapons for the Confederacy. The alterations needed for some m-1841 Mississippi rifles was to have these nose caps cut back and reshaped to accept a saber bayonet.
This “dug” piece has perfect green patina. Unknown recovery location. Reference pages 343 – 349 in “Confederate Rifles & Muskets” by Murphy and Madaus. [jet]
