This artifact is a fine, excavated example of a convex two-piece CS cavalry script C button as worn on the uniforms of Confederate horse soldiers.
This brass, coat-size button has a border and a central, large Old English “C”. This excavated button is solid shape and is classed as a CS215A1 in Warren K. Tice’s reference volume. 23-mm. Reverse is pushed in, the shank remains but is bent over. Maker’s backmark is worn but readable, “S. ISAACS CAMPBELL & Co. London”.
Recovered from Mine Run, VA. Overall dark patina with thin edges of “C” showing bright possibly due to slightly over cleaning. This would make a fine addition to any Civil War button display. [jet]
